Description
This watercolor painting captures a New England Stone Arch Bridge in Massachusetts. The bridge supports an old railroad that is now a hiking & bicycling trail.
The old Nashua, Action & Boston railroad crosses Salmon Brook in Dunstable MA & this was a scenic stop for my bike riding group.
I love the beautiful architecture of hand-chiseled stones stacked neatly without mortar!
The "keystone", a wedge-shaped stone at the top of the arch, is the final piece placed during construction & locks all the stones into position.
The arch shape spreads weight along the curve to the supports on each end so that the side abutments carry the load.
This bridge arch is only ONE layer of stone & supported the weight of a TRAIN!
