Description
This watercolor painting captures a single maple leaf on white background. The leaf is bright with Fall season colors of green, yellow, orange & red.
Fun Fact: Maple syrup starts in the leaves!
Leaves make sugar in summer. The sugar moves to the tree trunk for winter. In the Spring, the tree soaks up water that mixes with the sugar & makes maple sap.
To collect the sap, a tap hole is drilled in the trunk, a spout is put in the hole & a bucket hangs under to collect the dripping sap.
The watery sap is brought to a sugar house & boiled. As water evaporates, the sap becomes a dense sweet syrup.
And it all started in the maple leaf!
I enjoyed seeing all the steps in this fun process while living in New England, where many numbers of maple farms are located.
